The White House last week issued a strategy document, “Strategy for American Innovation”, that sums up its approach to “winning the future.” The policy rolls together both old and new White House initiatives, and elaborates on the point made by President Barack Obama during his State of the Union address that invention and new advances will be the cornerstone for future domestic growth. With respect to energy, the strategy lays out a plan for how the country can “unleash a clean energy revolution”. Recommendations include: Renewable energy supplies should be double that of 2008 by the end of 2012; Create three new energy innovation hubs in 2012; Expand support for energy research and development through increased Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) funding; and, Accelerate the application of new ideas from nanotechnology, biotechnology, and advanced manufacturing.
