The World Health Organization (WHO) is developing guidelines to “Protecting Workers from Potential Risks of Manufactured Nanomaterials”, in an attempt to facilitate improvements in occupational health and safety of workers potentially exposed to nanomaterials. The guidelines will provide recommendations to improve occupational safety and health in all countries, but especially in low and medium-income countries. The development of the guidelines will involve establishing a Guideline Developing Group and an External Review Group, both of which will reflect the diversity of manufactured nanomaterials and manufacturing processes on the global scale, while also recognizing cultural differences of workplace safety. WHO is currently in the process of identifying scientific knowledge and expertise on nanomaterials and health, as well as individuals interested in participating in the development of these guidelines.
