The Thailand-SKKU (Sungkyunkwan University) Nanotechnology Workshop opened this morning at Thailand Science Park Convention Center. The two days event is being hosted by NANOTEC from Jan 15-16. Prof. Hyunsoo Kim, Executive VP and Prof. Ji-Beom Yoo, Dean, College of Engineering and Deputy Director of SKKU Advanced Institute of Nanotechnology (SAINT) led a delegation of 6 SSKU researchers to this workshop. Leading the Thailand delegation is Prof. Pairash Thajchayapong, Chairman of NANOTEC Executive Board and Dr. Thaweesak Koanantakool, President of NSTDA. Also attending the workshop are representatives from the Thai 8 Centers of Excellence (COEs) which have signed nanotechnology research collaboration with NANOTEC.
“This is an important scientific activity under the initiative of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn which helps to stregthen scientific collaboration between the two countries” said Prof. Pairash in his welcome remarks. He went on to provide some information on HRH visit to SKKU on April 18, 2013 with executives from PTT and Thai academia for a benchmarking study was a key and fruitful visit. Since then, there has been a couple of follow up visits in May of 2013 by SKKU to NSTDA, NANOTEC, and Chulalongkorn University and in August 2013 by NSTDA to SKKU.
Prof. Kim also echoed this sentiment of scientific collaboration by stating that the workshop is one of many research exchange activities that will be implemented to enhance the nanotechnology research capabilities of both countries. There are specific research topics that are of much interest to Korean researchers and he thinks the workshop is an excellent venue to gain knowledge.
The workshop consists of 16 scientific presentations and discussions. The organizers hope there will be mechanisms to support collaboration and opportunities for scholarships by both countries.
