Nanomedicines in Argentina, 2011

This article presents an overview of the current nanomedicine landscape in Argentina. Dr. Eder Romero, of the Universidad Nacional de Quilmes, and Dr. Alejandro Sosnik, of the Universidad Nacional de Buenas Aires, say that fostering research, innovation and progress of selected branches of nanotechnology is the way that developing countries face new scientific and technological challenges. Romero and Sosnik argue that the “foundation of any emerging applied research field demands the strategic investment of extensive governmental funds and the consequent generation of a critical mass of young, motivated and highly-qualified scientists that will later develop powerful and versatile technological platforms and educate a next generation of scientists.” In an effort to push forward the field of nanomedicine in Argentina, the two recently founded the Argentine Society for Nanomedicines (NANOMED-ar). The overall goal of NANOMED-ar is to educate the public, policymakers, and scientific community about nanomedicine. The organization plans to hold bimonthly meetings and small talks all around the country. Another goal is to improve the interaction between research groups and industry, in an effort to take nanomedicine from an explorative to a more applied level. The team also hopes to form a Latin American Society for Nanomedicines in conjunction with Brazil. The article can be viewed online at the link below.
