NanoThailand 2014 opened this morning at Thailand Science Park with a Keynote speech by Prof. Mihail C. Roco, Senior Advisor for Nanotechnology,NSF, USA on the topic of “Nanotechnology Tomorrow: Immersion in to socio-economic projects”. According to Prof. Roco, the global nanotechnology labour and market is expected to double each three years reaching about $4 trillion market and encompassing 8 million jobs by 2020. “There will be a shift from “passive” to “active” nanostructures/nanosystems” said Prof. Roco. “The nanosystems will be self powered, self repairing, and certainly dynanmic. Examples of opportunities and trends in nanomanufacturing R&D such as guided molecular assembling, modular and platform-based nanomanufacturing for nanosystems, nanobio manufacturing, and standardized tools, just to name a few”.
Also speaking as a Keynote speaker was Prof. Sirirurg Songsivilai, Executive Director of NANOTEC who gave a talk on “Nanotechnology Development in Thailand”. In his talk Prof. Sirirurg presented information on HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s interest in nanotechnology both from a personal perspective and research development focus. Prof. Sirirurg also gave information on the latest BBC’s interest in the robotic e-delicious sensor that is capable of tasting and smelling food, which then uses gathered data to compare it against a “government-approved” grade from a dish of the same type.
NanoThailand is an international conference (scientific and exhibition) organized every 2 years by The Nanotechnology Association of Thailand. NanoThailand 2014 is being held from Nov 25-28 at Convention Center, Thailand Science Park. A total of 30 speakers and over 500 participants are attending the 3 days event. Participants/visitors are academia, private sector groups, research agencies, and S&T policy officials both Thai and overseas.
