A technique called cryogenic near-field infrared microscopy has allowed researchers to observe how the electrical properties of the correlated insulator vanadium oxide (V2O3) evolve as it switches from being a metal to an insulator. The work shows that the strain involved during this Mott transition can strongly influence the behaviour of electrons, and the study will help us better understand these technologically important materials…..
