Researchers at the University of Texas at San Antonio have formulated two segregation rules that can be used to determine which elements will preferentially separate out to the surface in a bimetallic nanoalloy. The rules are based on the melting temperature and the surface energies of both elements in the alloy and have been successfully applied to explain metal segregation in over 10 bimetallic nanoalloys, including a gold-silver alloy, historically known as “Electrum”………
